New Title graphic!

So i figured i needed something a little flashier at the top of my blog (now that i'm pumping out entries like a mad-man) so i asked my friend, and former co-worker Peter, to give it a whirl. So in 5 minutes he had the above image done. Pretty nice. Peter is really good and hopefully i'll get him to help me out more in the future to get a nice consistent colour scheme on this site. Anyways, i figured it might be fun to have little weekly contests (or monthly depending on what works) where people send in submissions for new logos/title graphics and i'll use them on the site. Fun times.

Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog

I just watched this while eating breakfast and i know some of my friends are die-hard Joss Whedon fans. So here is the full thing, thanks to Hulu (for once) the video is available everywhere - not just the US.

Joss Whedon’s Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog is a 40 minute musical that stars Neil Patrick Harris as Dr. Horrible, a bumbling, video blogging super villain who’s trying to get into the Evil League of Evil. The project is available on iTunes for $4 - this week Hulu also put it on its site for free with commercials.

The video is an experiment in a new type of video format that is professionally produced and designed to spread virally (although Whedon is stopping short of supporting BitTorrent trading). Whedon wrote a hilarious guest post on the Hulu blog about the show as well.

New use for the Wii Nunchuck

People are creative, and they find ways to make (sometimes) interesting things using common items. This guy thought that it would be cool to use the nunchuck from the Wii to steer his canoe. Why not? (Source: Engadget)

You can also check out my post about the TED conference, and watch Johnny Lee show you how to make the Wii-mote into something really amazing.

Tree Man

Update
Looks like the tree man got some medical help afterward and is doing better. Here's a follow up from Reuters

As always, some co-workers and I were talking about crazy diseases and stuff that occur around the world (see my post on the 'Boy whose skin fell off'). Anyways, i remember seeing this some time ago, and it's still pretty creepy/bizarre even now. Video below:

Holy Schnikes!

Travis Pastrana is pretty nuts. He is basically an anomaly since he should probably be dead by now doing some of the things he's done (proof: here and here). Now Ken Block and Travis do this...

Already a certifiably insane pair, Travis Pastrana and Ken Block have upped the nuttiness yet again. Going after the money shot for the cover of RacerX Magazine, an Impreza and a MotoX bike took to the wild blue yonder in search of photographic gold. We think they managed, and we'd repeat the jumps over and over whether or not the perfect shot was already on the memory card, just like the airborne teammates.

TED - Ideas worth spreading

I've known about the TED conference for a couple years now and it's unfortunate that more peoples don't know about them. A brief history of the conference is available here. Basically a bunch of smart/talented/interesting people come together to disseminate information and to dream and share ideas. It's pretty cool. Since 2006 the TED talks have been available online for all to view. Below are a couple of my favorites.

Urban Soccer

If you know anything about soccer (or football as it's called everywhere outside of North America), you know that when you score a goal, you go crazy (GOOOOAALLLL!!!). The same applies when you kick the ball into trash cans and into buildings.

Red Bull Air Race

Funny enough, i was talking with some chaps at lunch today and mentioned the crazy events that Red Bull produces around the globe(like soap box races, freeride mountain bike and the flugtag), and when i go to bestofyoutube.com today i find this little gem. Looks like a pretty intense sport, and 9.6Gs would mean that i would weigh about 170lbs * 9.6 = 1632lbs.. nutso.

Pixar movie list

Here is a list of pixar movies for the coming 3-4 years. Looks like they'll continue to make really entertaining movies.

From The Animation Blog.com:

Complete details on all upcoming Pixar movies

Pixar has released information for all their upcoming movies, including plot details and release dates. Check it out below:

June 27, 2008 – WALL•E
May 29, 2009 – Up
October 2, 2009 – Toy Story in 3-D
February 12, 2010 – Toy Story 2 in 3-D
June 18, 2010 – Toy Story 3 in 3-D
Summer 2011 – Newt
Christmas 2011, The Bear and the Bow
Summer 2012 – Cars 2

Up synopsis:

From the Academy Award nominated team of director Pete Docter (”Monsters, Inc.”) and co-director Bob Peterson comes “Up,” a comedic adventure taking off (and lifting spirits) in summer 2009. Carl Fredricksen spent his entire life dreaming of exploring the globe and experiencing life to its fullest. But at age 78, life seems to have passed him by, until a twist of fate (and a persistent 8-year old Wilderness Explorer named Russell) gives him a new lease on life. “Up” takes audiences on a thrilling journey where the unlikely pair encounter wild terrain, unexpected villains and jungle creatures. When seeking adventure next summer — look “Up.”

Newt synopsis:

What happens when the last remaining male and female blue-footed newts on the planet are forced together by science to save the species, and they can’t stand each other? That’s the problem facing Newt and Brooke, heroes of “newt,” the Pixar film by seven-time Academy Award winner for sound Gary Rydstrom, and director of Pixar’s Oscar-nominated short, “Lifted.” Newt and Brooke embark on a perilous, unpredictable adventure and discover that finding a mate never goes as planned, even when you only have one choice. Love, it turns out, is not a science.

The Bear and the Bow synopsis:

A rugged and mythic Scotland is the setting for Pixar’s action-adventure “The Bear and the Bow.” The impetuous, tangle-haired Merida, though a daughter of royalty, would prefer to make her mark as a great archer. A clash of wills with her mother compels Merida to make a reckless choice, which unleashes unintended peril on her father’s kingdom and her mother’s life. Merida struggles with the unpredictable forces of nature, magic and a dark, ancient curse to set things right. Director Brenda Chapman (”The Prince of Egypt,” “The Lion King”) and the storytelling wizards of Pixar conjure humor, fantasy and excitement in this rich Highland tale. It’s voice talent is as follows: Reese Witherspoon, Billy Connolly, Emma Thompson.

Cars 2 synopsis:

All the world’s a racetrack as racing superstar Lightning McQueen zooms back into action, with his best friend Mater in tow, to take on the globe’s fastest and finest in this thrilling high-octane new installment of the “Cars” saga. Mater and McQueen will need their passports as they find themselves in a new world of intrigue, thrills and fast-paced comedic escapades around the globe. “Cars 2″ is being directed by Brad Lewis, producer of the Oscar-winning film “Ratatouille.”

Inspiration

The world is a tough place to understand. A lot of crazy stuff goes on, and no one really has a good explanation for it. Some people have thoughts or ideas, but rarely does it really make sense. It seems to me that a lot of the people who are most afflicted in the world, have the most amazing outlook on life (and depending on their beliefs, the life to come). I watched this video today and it's the type of thing that makes you laugh and then cry. Below is the excerpt from the program:

Jonny Kennedy died in 2003 aged 36. He had a terrible genetic condition called Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) -- which meant that his skin literally fell off at the slightest touch, leaving his body covered in agonising sores and leading to a final fight against skin cancer.

In his last months Jonny decided to work with filmmaker Patrick Collerton to document his life and death, and the result was a film, first broadcast in March 2004, that was an uplifting, confounding and provocatively humorous story of a singular man. Not shying away from the grim reality of EB, the film was also a celebration of a life lived to the full.

When it was first shown, The Boy Whose Skin Fell Off captivated nearly 5 million viewers and helped to raise £500,000 for the EB charity DebRA. Channel 4 is re-screening the film and re-visiting Jonny's family to see how they have come to terms with his death and the public's reaction to the film.

Jonny was frank about his feelings on his upcoming death and practical about the arrangements. The film featured moving interviews with his friends and family, including his mother Edna, who had been his life-long carer and faced the prospect of Jonny's death with disarming mixed feelings, torn between relief for Jonny and knowing that she would miss him desperately.

Tron 2

I never saw the original Tron (i know, i know) but the new movie looks pretty amazing. Check out the newly leaked trailer from Comic-Con over at Gizmondo

Cansolair

Another cool video that i just watched on Stumbleupon involved a very ingenious invention from a Newfoundlander (if you're not one of my friends or co-workers you probably don't know that i'm a newfoundlander... well maybe not 100% by birth, but i'm here for good now). So it's really great to see someone, in this case Jim Meaney of Cansolair, doing something new and environmentally friendly. I can remember seeing this video some time ago on CBC but i figured it's something that everyone should know about.

Brilliant Newfoundlander Invents the Solution!

Benford's Law

So i generally eat my breakfast at the computer (i don't have cable, and my wife is up before me, so i just watch videos or get my news updates while eating - yes i'm a nerd) and i'll often use Stumpleupon to find new/interesting things. So up until today, i had never heard of Benford's Law, but it's pretty amazing (if you think mathematical laws and such are interesting). Check out the video below to see how this law applies to data from almost any natural source. It's really surprising.

The carlton dance

I grew up when Fresh Prince was in its prime, and i'll admit that i enjoyed the show. Here's a pretty amazing collection of Carlton's dance moves. If you weren't aware, he was actually a talented dancer when he was just a kid and has this 'gnarly' dance book and commercial out..

Breakin' and Poppin'

The first Pixar animated short

Found this on Digg - pretty crazy stuff. I'll let the below description and the video speak for themselves... but 1984!! yikes!

The Adventures of André and Wally B. is an animated short made in 1984 by the Lucasfilm Computer Graphics Project, which would later be spun out as a startup company called Pixar. Although it is technically not a Pixar short, the animation was by John Lasseter, who was working on his first computer animated project and would move on to be a pivotal player at Pixar. The credits for the piece are concept/direction Alvy Ray Smith, animation John Lasseter, technical lead Bill Reeves, technical contributions by Tom Duff, Eben Ostby, Rob Cook, Loren Carpenter, Ed Catmull, David Salesin, Tom Porter, and Sam Leffler, filming by David DiFrancesco, Tom Noggle, and Don Conway, and computer logistics by Craig Good.

The animation on the feature was truly groundbreaking at the time, featuring the first use of motion blur in |CG animation. Lasseter pushed the envelope by asking for manipulatable shapes capable of the squash and stretch style, as earlier CG models had generally been restricted to rigid geometric shapes.

It was rendered on one Cray X-MP/48 (where 48 stands for 4 processors and 8 million words of internal memory, with word size of 64 bits (i.e. 8 bytes) it means its RAM size was 64 MB) and ten VAX 11/750s from Project Athena.

Big Mac Index

Just saw this on Canada AM - The Economist has something called 'The Big Mac Index'. It's used as an international currency 'check' to see how expensive a Big Mac from McDonald's is compared to the value of that countries dollar. Pretty interesting stuff. Canada pays a bit of a premium, but other places play a whole lot more. Check out the link or the image below for all the details.

The Carol Burnett Show was a bit before my time, but there's no denying that there were some amazing moments. Tim Conway is unbelievable at keeping a straight face, and just blows you away with how dedicated he is to the characters... Watch and learn young padawan.

The realities of a creative

If you're not in the work force yet, you may not be jaded enough to understand all this. I'm sure if you work in the creative field, or if you work closely with customers, then you know exactly how this guy feels..

The Process

Dimensions

Anyone know how to describe the 4th dimension? How about the 5th? Well thanks to the wonders of the internet, you can now describe to your friends and family all dimensions up to 10!! It's not the easiest to follow sometimes, mind you, but it is pretty cool.

Imagining the Tenth Dimension

For further knowledge and insight into the world of dimensions, check out the wikipedia entry.

Update: Job Security

So the guy has finally given up the password to San Fran's network. You can see the original story here and find out all the info at slashdot.

What a waste...

Who knows what this person could have been!? A doctor perhaps, or a an amazing athlete... but no, i will forsake all standard professions and become a Grand Master of Tetris... It is pretty amazing though...

Good evening Godless Sodomites...

You'll understand the title when you watch the following video:

Best Emmy Moment Ever

So i'm here enjoying some time with the good old internets (made of tubes - wait untilt he end... it's worth it), watching some classic vids. I can't help but share all of these with you people (or person depending on how my analytics turn out...).

This skit is super classic (much like the blue oyster cult also with Walken)
SNL Census with Christpher Walken

I really don't know how these guys didn't drop down in hilarious laughter... If you don't know, Alec Baldwin has been on SNL many, many times - and has been involved in many classic skits. This one just blows the others away.
Schweddy Balls

I don't think it's a suprise to anyone if i say that SNL has gone down hill over the years. Obviously, they've had ups and downs. Will Farrell was one of the most amazing comedians to come out of SNL in recent years and the Jeopardy series lives on in the millions of internet videos dedicated to Trebek.

Celebrity Jeopardy - Cruise, Sandler, Connery

Chris Farley was also a tour de force on SNL (note to comedians - please stop taking drugs when you're so funny - we miss the laughter. Here is Chris Farley in a classic skit.

Japanese Game Show

Sports Awards + Timberlake = watchable

So i'm not all that into sports (non-standard sports like skateboarding or mountain biking i'm completely into though...), so obviously i didn't watch (or know) that the ESPY's were on this past weekend. I heard someone mention it today and figured i'd give it a look - the comment was that JT was really good as a host. I did a little surfing and although i don't get a lot of the sports jokes (like i said i don't watch/keep up with sports) i do appreciate Justin's style and ability to do EVERYTHING! I mean, what can't the guy do (peep the commercials for my reasoning).

Wow (excessive nerd-cred)

Some people have a lot of time on their hands... sometimes those people make ridiculously complex lego production lines to produce lego cars... Now i'm not judging, part of me is jealous really, but this seems a little much... Enjoy

Lego Assembly Line

Stop Motion is amazing

Stop-motion used to be a bit of an artsy thing, that you might see here and there - but more as a novelty. Now though, with the advent of things like youtube and other video sharing sites, people are being creative in the stop-motion medium like crazy (the amount of time it would take to make one of these boggles my mind!!). Check out the following for excellent examples.

Here we have some classic video games done in various foods and objects. I especially like the candy for the jet propulsion in Asteroids. So much good stuff here it's tough to choose a single 'best moment'... so simply enjoy.

Triumph the insult comic dog

Conan O'Brien has done some amazing stuff over the years. He's amazingly talented and really knows how to keep things fresh and do things that his audience will love. Triumph was a re-occurring character that had humour, shock value, and wit that doesn't often get aired. So here are a couple of the best...

Digital Shorts

So SNL has been pretty poor over the last few years (compared to the golden years of the 90's) - but one of the brighter spots has been the introduction of Akiva Schaffer, Jorma Taccone, and Andy Samberg(the Lonely Island guys). They've done some hits and had some misses, but in general they come through, i think, because they know the internet audience and what gets people going - and how to make it spread virally. Here's a collection of some of the better ones (sorry for the advertisement at the beginning - stupid nbc - gotta make money somehow i suppose).

Chronicals of Narnia (Lazy Sunday)

That's just a selection of the better ones. Most (if not all) of the digital shorts are available on NBC's website. Enjoy

Most amazing...

Toaster!

Betcha didn't see that one coming. Well, this is the most amazing toaster - it's a cylon toaster (which makes so much sense). If you don't understand anything so far then i think it'll be safe to assume that you haven't watched Battlestar Galactica (best show on tv - maybe tied with Top Gear). In Battlestar Galactica cylons are often called 'toasters' - for somewhat obvious reasons. Anyways peep the toaster out below, and if you buy one call me cuz i'm coming over.
If you need some further back-story on Battlestar or cylons, follow the appropriate link.

I'm old Greg

So British comedy is often thought to be of higher quality than much of that in the US of A. I find humour in all comedy (usually) - but this particular sketch has been mentioned sooo many times in my group of friends. So without further Adieu, i give you The Mighty Boosh - The legend of Old Gregg

Job security

So I work as a software developer, and being involved in IT-related activities i can understand how something like this could happen... it's just that it usually doesn't and when it does it's in a movie or something. So this fellow locked out San Francisco officials from some important network. As the title says, this is one surefire way to get job security... unfortunately it'll probably also land you in jail, which is a bit of a downside to this particular plan.

In other news, a little girl in the United States figured out how to beat those pesky claw games...

Something about spaghetti

So i often take my lunch to work (almost everyday) and for the second time, in a couple of years, i brought spaghetti sauce instead of the chili i thought i was bringing. The guys at the dinner table had a good laugh, as did i, but i should probably look into a sensible labeling system to ensure no future awkward meals...

So here's some stuff for today.

E3 is going on over the next few days, and Microsoft announced some pretty cool stuff for the Xbox360 - and a couple PC things (fallout 3 whoohoo!). Another big announcement is that Final Fantasy XIII (13) is going to be on the xbox. A trailer was released, and i've included it for your viewing pleasure.

Final Fantasy 13

I've also included another trailer (on youtube) that shows some different gameplay footage.

Also, this weekend past, 3 guys from Vancouver, BC finished off a 2 week long trek across Canada here in St. John's. They hung out with us, and generally had a good time. You can check out their mission on their blog here. Funny enough, they go to a church called Victory Christian Centre (that's the name of my church as well) and one of the guys went to Hillsong with one of our friends here in St. John's (small world). Good times were had, and i think they got some cool footage for their media guys to use in their pastors series throughout the summer.

And for my final bit for the day, in celebration of 'Brangelinas' new twins i give you the trailer for Brad Pitts next movie (Actually looks like it could be funny)...

Burn After Reading

It may be in poor taste, but this has to be the best use for a USB flash driver - EVER! Don't take my word for it, check out the link to see what i'm talking about.

I like guitar

So i've been playing guitar for 10 years or so, and while i can get by playing most 'reasonable' song, i'm not amazing by any means. Here are a few guitar videos that are awesome, amazing or just plain good. Enjoy.

Stairway to Heaven live (Rodrigo y Gabriela)

One of my favorite guitar players is Tommy Emmanuel. If you have some time, watch some of his videos and find out about this great musician.

Here's Tommy playing with the Joscho Stephan Trio - who are amazing in their own right.

Tommy Emmanuel & Joscho Stephan Trio

Here are two of the best acoustic players - period. Don Ross and Andy McKee.

Don Ross & Andy McKee - Tight Trite Night

Here's one of the meanest electric guitar player out there - Warren Haynes, playing Mississippi Queen.

Gov't Mule-Mississippi Queen LIVE

That's it for now. fire off any of your own suggestions if you have any.

The World is Just Awesome

You may not know this, but i don't have cable. Yes, i grew up with cable, but it's kinda expensive and my wife said it's internet or cable - and frankly i like the internet more (i can get my shows online anyways). One channel i really enjoy though, and watch a lot when i'm home and there is cable, is Discovery Channel. Here's a really nice/fun commercial they did - The world IS just awesome

The World is Just Awesome

4th most popular folk parody duo

Flight of the Conchords (FOTC), oh how i enjoy your witty banter and wonderful use of language. The New Zealand accent is quite nice, and these guys just have such a great on stage relationship that everything they do is funny. Of course you've probably already heard about Bret and Jemaine from their well recieved comedy show on HBO (don't get HBO, download the torrents silly).

Anyways, here are some of their best performances, as voted on by me, the blogger:

This is how i was first introduced to FOTC, and being married it struck a chord with me instantly. These guys know what they're talking about

Something for the Ladies

Another great comedian that i've found through my travels on the interweb is Demitri Martin. He's very clever and uses words in a way that most people don't anymore - the little things he says are often the funniest and most clever. Here are a couple of my favorite skits of his.

Visual Jokes on Large Pad

Just for Laughs

House of Cosby's

My good friend Peter got me into this series a year or two ago. It doesn't hold up for long, and i think the guy was sued or forced by Bill Cosby to stop doing the show, but the first couple episodes are great. Bill cosby is a pretty easy character to mock, but this does it in a pretty good natured way and still comes off as unique. Please enjoy and don't forget to 'Explore!!'

I can't stop myself

So i find it really hard not to share videos with people. I find the experience of talking and laughing about these silly videos to be an excellent bonding experience and can make ones lunch hour pass by with ease. Here's another great video, from Bud Light. Beer commercials are almost always enjoyable - at least they're not fooling anybody (usually).

Swear Jar

Beer companies don't have a corner on the funny internet video market. Reebok made some great commercials with Terry Tate (office linebacker). It's exactly as it sounds

Terry Tate - Office linebacker

Where am I getting all of this?

So you may ask yourself, 'Gee mr. blog guy, where do you find all these videos?'. Well, curious internet friend, i have many sources, many, mysterious, sources. But mostly i'm bumming them off friends or finding them on sites like video Stumple Upon or Best of Youtube. I'm sure there are hundreds and millions of places that do this kind of stuff, but not everyone knows where to look, so that's where people like me come in. I just like to help - that's how i roll.

Some other good places to find videos:
  • Youtube has some decent recommendations now and again and if you're a member/logged-in then they'll give you suggestions based on what you watch or have favorited (good work)
  • Facebook: look at your friends posted items - that's where i put a lot of my favorite stuff before i started this here web site. (this solution actually requires having friends, and friends who like interesting things, and who post them to facebook - so this may not work for everyone - unless you have me as a friend!!)
  • As i mentioned above - stumbleupon is an amazing place to waste a few hours
  • Also as i mentioned in my first post, Digg generally has current, interesting news and videos
So to end off this post, lets look at the somewhat recent weezer video 'Pork and Beans' and all the wonderful internet memes it includes.

Crazy Fun

So i do a little mountain biking and skateboarding (not so much now as i'm in my mid-twenties), but i've never been really extreme - i've known my limitations and as such i haven't got hurt really. Which is good i think. Some people though, just love to do crazy stuff - this one isn't quite as crazy as it is fun, but i'm guessing a few people had some sore bodies the next day...

Extreme Slip and Slide 2007

When i'm home on the computer, surfing the net, alone, i find that i rarely 'lol' (laugh out loud) - it's more in the witty lunch-time banter with my office mates that things take on their humourous side. This one however, made me laugh (As did the one after that). I don't know what it is that hits you to make you laugh - but these two do it for me!

Laughing baby girl, slowed down

Some people (my wife) think this baby sounds a little scary, kinda possessed or something, which i can see... but it hits my funny bone every time.. so good!

The anti-global warming post

UPDATE: looks like the videos have been taken down (suprise)... if i find the video elsewhere i'll repost.

Found the full video on another site!

So i can't say that i've researched either side of the argument very well, but from what little i do know it seems to me that Global warming and the craziness surrounding CO2 emissions has little to do with reality, and more to do with media and politics. I could ramble on for a few paragraphs about why this may be the case, but you're way better off watching these videos. Al Gore, be warned!

There are 8 parts, hopefully they don't get pulled from youtube, but we'll give it a go anyways. The show title is called The Great Global Warming Swindle (very catchy title)

Welcome back!

Ok, so i haven't been paying a lot of attention to this blog for a while, but i thought of a good 'topic' that i think will keep me updating - it's something that i'll be looking at/for anyways, so it should be good. I'm going to try and be my own Digg.com - that is, i'll be posting interesting videos and articles that i find, or my friends find, from all around the web. Generally they'll be funny or insightful videos and/or geeky developer stuff. But i think there'll be enough fun things for anyone.

So to start off i found this interesting interview over at O'Reilly that asks questions to the "project software engineer for the Phoenix Lander Mission". Some pretty interesting stuff. They have to work under some pretty stringent guidelines and ensure that a 700lb object lands on a planet millions of miles away... pretty crazy software/hardware feat!

On a bit of a lighter note, my co-worker Matt sent me a link to this cool website that does a lot of i'm hoping to do in the future - and that is provide lots of entertaining videos and content. So you might want to check out todaysbigthing.com. The one for today is especially cool - stop-motion is a huge internet hot item. Some people are taking the medium to amazing levels. I've embedded the video below in case you want to check out all my other stuff as well:

Western Spaghetti

Continuing on, another co-worker (Clinton), sent me this fun game that grabbed my attention for a while - IndestructoTank A.E. Not a lot to explain, just make sure you hit the ground every now and again or else you run out of gas (not sure how that works, but i didn't make the game!)

Well i think that's enough for my first post on this new topic. I've got a number of videos that i plan on putting up here soon, it's just a matter of time now. Hopefully i can get a couple of people to view the blog and if my friends at work keep coming up with content, then i'll have lots of goodies to share with the masses (or just you 2 people who'll show up randomly - thanks by the way)...
